Meet Anne Helm

Some have been helped within the mental health system, while others have been hurt.

Many, when asked, will say they've experienced both the good and the bad.

Yet, truly talking about and acknowledging the hurts and figuring out a way to move forward remains a real challenge.

On Friday, July 11, Anne Helm will join us to talk about how New Zealand has approached this issue and support us to consider our own next steps.

More about the film: The secret, often shameful history of New Zealand’s psychiatric hospitals is laid bare in Mental Notes, a feature-length documentary by award-winning filmmaker Jim Marbrook. Huge numbers were placed there for life. Some were deemed hopeless cases, never to be part of society again. These were the patients and residents of New Zealand's 'Bins', the huge psychiatric hospitals that dotted the country up until the 90s. 'Mental Notes' tracks the intersecting stories of five remarkable New Zealanders. Their marginalised experiences form the backbone of a social history that many still feel uncomfortable to acknowledge.
